Das Buch lag heute nach einer sehr frustrierenden Phase in meinem Arbeitsleben auf meinem Schreibtisch. Ich hatte seit zwei Monaten keinen Bleistift mehr angefasst - Jetzt ist bereits entschieden, dass das Buch, handlich wie es ist, demnächst immer in meiner Tasche sein wird. Neil Gaiman nimmt den Kreativen die Worte aus dem Mund, und Chris Riddell illustriert sie wundervoll. Wer Künstler, Musiker, Autor ist oder darauf hinarbeitet, es zu sein - Dieses Buch ist vielleicht das, was den Funken wieder zur Flamme werden lässt, wenn er einmal flackert.... Ne, ernsthaft jetzt. Gutes Buch. Kaufen, jetzt. Hopp.
Neil Gaiman hat neben seinen bekannten Erzählungen hin und wieder auch einige mehr oder minder philosophischen Betrachtungen geschrieben, die als Vor- oder Nachworte, oder sogar als Artikel in Zeitungen erschienen sind. Chris Riddell ist ein häufiger Illustrator von Neils Werk – und nebenher noch ein überaus bissiger Karikaturist, der unter anderem auch im GUARDIAN seine Feder antreten lässt.In Großbritannien – wie auch in einigen anderen Ländern der Welt – sind die öffentlichen Bibliothe-ken und die Bibliothekare in Gefahr, weswegen Neil unter anderem im New Statesman sein „Credo“ zum Wert des Lesens veröffentlicht hat und auf ReadingAgency.org.uk seine Gedanken zur Rettung des Lesens und der Bibliotheken.Hierbei geht es ihm in erster Linie um das literarische Lesen, das in seinen Augen keinerlei Einschränkungen unterzogen werden dürfte, ja, das sogar das Wichtigste Lesen zu sein scheint. Hier wird ein Einsteinzitat angeführt: „If you want your children tob e intelligent read them fairytales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairytales.“Nach dem sehr launischen “Making a Chair†folgt dann “Make Good Art,†das mehr oder minder Neils Erfolgsrezept im Leben – wenn man es den so nennen möchte – wiedergibt, und das tatsächlich so Einiges an Weisheit enthält.All diese Texte sind nicht neu, aber in dieser Zusammenstellung sehr gut aufeinander abgestimmt und die Illustrationen Riddells machen dieses kleine Büchlein zu einem wunderbaren Geschenk an einen selbst und an andere. Muss man haben – insbesondere als Gaiman-Fan.
Ich war mega enttäuscht als ich dieses dünne Büchlein erhielt. Nicht nur das einfach eine Rede von Neil Gaiman (die man sich eindrucksvoller im Internet anhören kann) einfach nur nochmal fast Wort für Wort gedruckt wurde, nein... die Illustrationen und die Aufmachung sind auch mehr als enttäuschend (für mich). Manches kann man kaum lesen so hingekritzelt sieht es aus. Ich fand es jetzt nicht sehr inspirierend und hatte auf mehr Inhalt gehofft.
Nette Illustrationen und ein altbekannter Text von Gaiman. Wenig Inhalt, mehr so ein Bilderbuch. Wurde mir angekündigt als Buch dass helfen soll die eigene Kreativität zu entfalten/trainieren, ists aber gar nicht.

Neben der Tatsache, dass Gaiman hier eine Lanze für Bibliotheken und das geschriebene Wort an sich bricht, ist es besonders für alle interessant, die im engeren oder weiteren Sinne "Kunst" machen, schreiben, malen, bildhauern, entwerfen, konstruieren ... es ist eine Erinnerung, wofür wir das machen. Für wen. Und es kommt optisch ansprechend daher, mit Witz, schnoddrig wie gewohnt und kurz. Mehr muss ja nicht gesagt werden. Ein kleines Kunstwerk. Besondere Erwähnung verdient der Illustrator, dessen Arbeit wahrhaftig eine artistische Koproduktion ist.
This is a wonderfull little book! Art Matters collects quotable wisdoms born in the mind of Neil Gaiman - it's the things he said giving talks on a specific topic, opinions he has and views he stands for. It's everything we've found in The View from the Cheap Seats but brought on point by the illustrations from Chris Riddel (I loved them!).I flew through the pages - and it's quite short. A well chose gift for a Neil Gaiman Fan!
